THE HAPPINESS PRINCIPLE

Mock-up done at request of client
This is a sample cover I designed as part of a submission process. I was given the below information to reference for the required cover design.
Logo Design
For the logo, I wanted to emphasis the word “Glücks” which translates to luck. Hence, I made that part of the word a slightly different shade than the rest. I went on to pick a couple other key words, ones evoking emotion, to highlight throughout the rest of the text.
Cover Assets
As part of the instructions were to include “bright, friendly colors” as well as “symbols of luck and happiness” I decided focus my color scheme around yellows and greens. I used Jim Krause’s Color Index book to figure a good color scheme to work off of.
To the right you can see how I constructed the various assets of the cover using stock photos, all while making sure to incorporated those bright, friendly colors into the final images.
Scrapped Cover Design Concepts
These are two early draft mock-ups I did using a more mix-media approach (a bit of Terry Gilliam influence made its way into these). Not happy with the direction these were going I scrapped that idea.
For my cover mock-ups, I tend to create a design using a collage approach. Then I refine the design after settling on one I like.
